Blog 20 – 7 Free activities on Curacao

When I prepared for my internship a couple of months ago I had not in mind writing my own blogs at this time, neither visiting all these astonishing places on Curacao. Here I am, almost at the end of my placement.  A lot of interesting places came on my path. You can imagine expenses will rise substantially. But, this tropical island has a lot of beautiful spots where you will not chobolobo 1have to pay a dime to see the beauty of it.  Here are 7 free activities you can do on Curacao:

  1. Visit Landhuis Chobolobo
My first attraction of exploration was Landhuis Chobolobo, inside the Curacao Liqueur Factory can be found. The self-explanatory tour through local history takes you back to the time of the production process of the Genuine Curacao Liqueur. In the courtyard of the Landhuis you can find the Chobolobo Café to have a quick stop. Entrance to the Landhuis is totally free.
  2. Take a walk around the Handelskade (Willemstad)
You might go to Willemstad for some shopping, or to see the famous ‘Swinging old lady’. But here you can also spot the Handelskade and even more beautiful; around you see pastel colored houses belonging to UNESCO World Heritage.

3. Go see the Floating Market
During the work week you can walk by the floating market in Willemstad, where you can find         all kinds of delicious fresh fruit just coming from across the south coast, Venezuela. The kind         fruits sellers will help you giving the best advice they can. For only a couple of guilders you           can taste some of the lovely fruits.

On Curacao we are lucky having this plantation where the famous CurAloe products are produced! And if you are going the way to the plantation you might take a look at the unique Art Factory of Serena, who makes Chichi sculptures together with her artists.

There are famous beaches surrounded by enormous hotels, but if you want to see more of the beachlife here, you must follow the way to ‘Westpunt’. In the direction of the ‘Westpunt’ you will find beautiful spots like; Playa Lagun, Kenepa, Porto Mari, Playa Daaibooi and a lot more mind-blowing beaches.

  4. Find out about history around The Rif Fort
Another tip; the moment you take a walk around the Handelskade, you might have time left to walk in and around the Rif Fort Village. Originally, the Rif Fort was built to protect the country against pirates and other predators. Now the fort is a part of a history monument. Inside there are restaurants, café’s, shops and more. Every other week a musician performs, to show some local entertainment which the tourists really appreciate.

Here you know my top 7 favorite free activities, do you think I forgot something? Well, do not hesitate to comment your favorite spot on our beautiful dushi island!
