Carnival is the largest and most important cultural experience of the island. Curacao Carnival is a celebration in a class of its own! There are several events and activities throughout January and February on Curacao during carnival. In Papiamentu, Carnival is pronounced and spelled; Karnaval. It will be five weeks filled with exotic – vibrant parties and parades; the preparation this season is all year round.

In this informative blog I will be providing you with some information about the carnival on Curacao. In the following blog I will be giving you more information about the schedule, routes and that also take place in January and February. I will also give you more information on how you can prepare for this wonderful event. Be prepared for two months full of enjoyment and pleasure.

Joining the Carnival

There are three ways you can join the Curacao carnival: you can watch it live on TV, join as a spectator along the road-side or as a participant marching and dancing in one of the many Carnival groups! To participate in the carnival you can join one of the many groups.  If you want to have your own group you must fill out a form that can be obtained through the official curacao carnival website. It will be an unforgettable experience if you decide to participate.

Preparing for the Carnival as a spectator

I personally advise you to bring sunscreen, cap or other shade provider, map route and something to drink. My favorite thirst-quencher is the locally produced Aloe Vera beverages that will keep you hydrated.  It is also important to come early because the best spots are already claimed. So you will have to seek for a good spot to watch the parade, preferably in the shade (Although these will be very difficult to find) and I also highly recommend you to bring you own chair and ice jugs to keep your beverages and/or snacks cold. There is nothing to worry about if you don’t want to bring your own food and drinks. Delicious food and beverages will be available everywhere!

The Curacao Tourism Board has a special tribune for tourist. You can always make use of this. There is a fee but you are insured of a good spot, food and drinks.
