Bon Biní, Bienvenido, Welkom, Welcome, Benvenuto, Wilkommen!

I’m Elton, 34, from the island of Curaçao (Southern Caribbean) where I was born, raised and currently living. I grew up in a local neighbourhood just west of Otrobanda in Willemstad. I speak Papiamentu, Dutch, Spanish, English, regular Italian and some German. Curaçao is a small but unique Island. It’s not the typical Caribbean island with just sun and beaches. It has a rich and interesting history and culture. The capital, Willemstad, is on the UNESCO World Heritage.

I love my country and I consider myself a true “Kurasoleño” or “yu di Kòrsou” (like we call Curaçaoans in Papiamentu) who has always appreciated the island, its people and culture. I feel lucky that I was born there. Travel and get to know the world has always been my dream since I was a small kid and I’m enjoying the fact that I’m able to so nowadays. I always did whatever I could in order to travel as much as possible. Travelling made me appreciate my country even more than I did before, since I always compare Curaçao to other countries I go to. I would like to encourage more people to travel and see more of the world if they’re able to do so, especially my fellow Curaçaoans and also Arubans and Bonairians.

From June 2013 until Dec. 2015 I was on a work & travel trip around the world. I quit my job, sold my stuff, grabbed my savings and left! These travels were done all by myself by working hard and saving money, no wealthy family! I’ve been to about 70 countries so far, and still counting. I believe that if you really want to do something and if you have a strong desire, you’ll do everything you can to be able to do it and that’s what I’ve always done in order to travel the world: my dream as a child!

I started writing this blog in July 2007 to keep family members, friends and acquaintances informed about my trips because I was leaving for a long work & travel trip at the time. I write this blog mostly for myself so I can look back at what I’ve seen and done. Trips I made before July 2007 do not appear on the blog, such as my trips to New York, Singapore, my first visits to Malaysia and Thailand, Egypt, Czech Republic and Morocco to mention a few. I’ll keep travelling as long as my wallet and my health allow me to do so. Travelling is such a great experience, difficult to properly express it in words. All the different cultures you get to know, the customs and ways of life, different food, big cities, small towns, parties, local celebrations, history, landscapes and others things we don’t have or that are different in Curaçao; and all the friends that I’ve made during my trips. I have friends and many contacts in different parts of the world today and that’s very valuable! Those friends are individuals I really care about and I’m happy to have met them. Travelling made me appreciate the things I have even more than before, since it made me very aware of the fact that hundreds of millions (or even more) people out there do not have anything! Because of travelling I also learned a new language (Italian), which is the 5th language I learned to speak and I’m still learning. I know a little German too and I’m trying to improve it whenever I can.

Enjoy and comments are always appreciated!
